Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid explains in a book titled ‘Cricket 2.0- Inside the T20 revolution’ written by Tim Wigmore and Freddie Wilde, why MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have enjoyed more success than Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL).
MS Dhoni-led CSK franchise, they have made it to the playoffs in each IPL season they featured in (except the 2016-17 period when they were suspended due to spot-fixing scandal). Apart from the two seasons (2009 and 2014), they have always played in IPL finals & they won three IPL trophies (2010, 2011 & 2018) and two CLT20 titles (2010 & 2014) as well. RCB, on the other hand, have no IPL title so far even failing to make it to the playoffs since 2016.
“When they got into the IPL, Chennai probably had an advantage over a lot of other franchises because their owners, India Cements, were already in the business of running cricket teams. CSK was just the most high-profile team that they ran. So in a sense, they’ve always had people on the ground and their scouting system was probably better right at the start than any other team,” Dravid told Hindustan Times.
I think they’ve been very poor with selections and auctions. Bangalore has never balanced their team very well. They had their best year when they had a bowler like Mitchell Starc who was able to close out games for them. But they kept going out and picking gun batsmen. That’s where Chennai has always been successful because they’ve often had stronger bowling than Bangalore,” he added.
Though Bangalore franchise has had one of the best teams over the years with players such as Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle but they haven’t been able to win a single season of IPL.
